Grey's of Ely is situated just out side the Cathedral City of Ely and was founded in 1946 by Charles Grey who, at that time, provided not only
coach travel, but also the local taxi,
wedding, hearse, and ambulance service. From its small beginnings the, now third generation family business, grew from one small
29-seat petrol engined coach to its now
26 strong fleet.
The business moved, in the early 1990's, to a purpose built premises at
Witchford, on the out-skirts of Ely and now operates with a staff base of over twenty-five.
Grey's of Ely operates a continual fleet regeneration programme, which ensures that they have an average vehicle age of just two and a half years old. Richard Grey, Managing director, says, "We continually improve upon our fleet year on year, to offer our customers the best facilities and ride quality. With the cost of a new coach being around £225,000 we need to ensure we keep them busy all the time."
At the heart of the company ethos is customer service and this is achieved with the help of continual staff training. All our drivers either have attained a Road Passenger Transport NVQ, or take part in our annual CPC driver training courses. This means that they hold a nationally recognised qualification for their skills.
The Driver's CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a government implemented qualification, in addition to their vocational driving licence. It is designed to continue a PCV License holder's professional development which carries on throughout a professional bus, coach or lorry driver's career.
The aims of Driver CPC are to:
• improve the knowledge and skills of lorry, bus and coach drivers before they start driving professionally
• develop their knowledge and skills throughout their working life
• improve road safety through better qualified drivers
Such areas as, contributing to health and safety in your work environment, helping passengers with special needs and providing professional customer care, are all included.
Mr. Grey, says, "As a Coach Operator I know it's not just the quality of our staff's driving that counts. Our drivers need to play many roles; they need to be a friendly face, trust worthy, flexible, a diplomat and be a source of information, they are after all our company's front-line ambassador, and the greater the customer experience they provide the more likely your customers will return to you time and time again. Supporting our drivers with annual CPC training, helps ensure that we can continue to provide all these things to our clients and keep improving upon our current high level of service".
